World Aids Candlelight Memorial 2024 - Blantyre Malawi
On the 2nd of August 2024, we had the privilege of joining Blantyre District over the weekend for the significant World Aids Candlelight Memorial event held at Kapeni Demonstration Primary School in Malawi. The event was centered around the powerful theme: "Let the communities lead by spreading love and showing solidarity in ending HIV and AIDS." This theme resonated deeply with participants, emphasizing communities’ vital role in the fight against this ongoing health crisis.
Strengthening One Health governance and Data Use in Malawi
The COVID-19 pandemic opened wide the eyes of the global community to the fact that health issues cannot be handled in isolation, but only through a holistic approach, requiring coordinated multi-sectoral intervention, with human health, animal health, and environmental health stakeholders working closely together across all levels of healthcare. This is generally referred to as the One Health approach. Many health development partners are paying attention to this.
Can frontline community health workers in hard-to-reach areas benefit from mobile digital payments? A case study from Malawi
Digital financial services (DFS) refer to the delivery of traditional financial services through digital devices such as phones, laptops, and tablets, for instance, mobile money payments. Evidence suggests that DFS has the potential to make financial services accessible to the underserved population (Gartner, 2022). Health development partners like WHO, USAID, and GAVI are promoting digital payment solutions as a substitute for traditional payment systems to leverage these advantages.
The transition to digital payments in the healthcare industry in Sub-Saharan Africa
Developing countries especially, in Africa, are becoming more and more innovative when it comes to combining finance and technology to create digital financial solutions e.g. Mobile Money (MM). MM has been around for about 15 years and was first floated in Kenya but was used mostly for peer-to-peer transfers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, locally owned businesses throughout Africa have taken advantage of Digital Financial Services (DFS). Health managers have wondered whether digital payments would be the most efficient way to pay health workers in Sub-Saharan Africa and what benefits it would have, as well as any risks it would portray.
Digital Health and Data Protection
The constant progression of technology allows us to do the unimaginable in multiple aspects of society. People can complete their degrees online, travel to space, and manage many systems more easily. In more recent years, the growth of Digital Health has been on a constant rise, allowing us to incorporate technology into our health systems to increase efficiency in the health sector. However, this has posed some ethical questions, especially regarding Data Protection and Privacy.
Problem-Solving Techniques in the Digital Health Space
Problem-solving is a step-by-step process of addressing the gap between the current state and the desired future state as defined by CDC. It is very evident that most digital health projects require problem-solving especially in this post COVID19 era.
In most cases, a digital solution is requested to replace a manual system or another digital system that was not functioning optimally. A typical example of a digital solution in this context is the adoption of electronic health records to replace paper-based records. The computerized health records must address the challenges of paper-based records otherwise the digital investment is wasted. In this article, we intend to share some techniques in problem-solving for digital health namely; simplification, analogy, and inversion.

Compelling Works Annual Staff Retreat
November 2024 2 Days
Every year, Compelling Works staff take a 2 full day retreat to collectively reflect on working processes, achievements and to plan for the years ahead.
The retreat is organized to mainly enable the country office to take a step back from the day-to-day work of the organization to strategize, harmonize working processes and spend time to rejuvenate while building a strong team bond needed to achieve goals.
Given that we have presence in 3 countries; Uganda, Malawi and Germany, the team members in each country meet in a central location physically and we all globally unite virtually to brainstorm, strategize, reconnect, do team building activities orany other breakout sections that encourage conversation, feedback and fun.
